Create tooltips in WordPress

A tooltip is a creation of HTML + CSS (markup languages) that allows us make things like when you leave the mouse over an element, normally text, explanatory text, a photo or a video comes out.

Luckily there are plugins for wordpress that allow us to create a tooltip, in this article I will talk about 2 plugins, surely the 2 most important today.

Plugin WordPress Tooltips

This is the name of the plugin itself: “WordPress tooltips”, this plugin will allow us to create some very interesting tooltips, here is an example capture of a tooltip created by this plugin:

As you can see when you leave the mouse over the text “tooltip de prueba” the text that appears in green appears to me, we can change that text for what we want, then I will explain it.

And here we can see a video tooltip that appears when you leave the mouse over “PS4”.

Basically the only thing we have to do once the plugin is installed is go to the options on the left side of our wordpress panel and there we will find the plugin and the option “create a new tooltip”, then a panel will appear very similar to when We create an article where the title will be the tooltip and what we write in text will be what is shown.

Example: we put the title “PS4” and we put the text “Clarification: the PS4 is a video console” and we will have our tooltip created. We can even create a tooltip with videos, as in the previous screenshot for which I have put “PS4” as the title in the tooltip and the video in the text, in this way every time the text “PS4” appears on our website and is left the mouse over said text will appear the video.

Very important: now wordpress allows us to insert videos just by copying the URL of the video but to create a tooltip with this plugin it will be necessary to copy the HTML provided by youtube, vimeo, etc. in the share> Insert options.

WordPress Tooltips

About this plugin: in the previous captures you see that the tooltip packs appear in green, but you can also choose white and dark, to choose some more color we would have to buy the Pro version, but I consider that the free version it is very complete and sufficient for most.

Furthermore, this plugin will create a glossary with the tooltips that we can see in “ourweb.com/glossary”, an option that can be deactivated in the plugin panel.

We will also find options such as the tooltips only being shown the first time in each article, that is, if we activate this option when in our article we use for example a keyword that we have previously saved as “PS4” because the video that I have put will be shown only the first time “PS4” appears in the article and not every time.

Among other options.

It is also very useful with the Woocommerce plugin as well.

Plugin Simple Tooltip

This plugin is much simpler than the previous one and it has logically certain advantages and certain disadvantages with respect to the first one.

Once you install Simple Tooltip instead of creating tooltips from a panel that offers you the plugin like the previous one and where if you define a tooltip for a keyword like “PS4”, that tooltip will appear in each article, instead, with Simple Tooltip will have to create the tooltips one by one and instead of your own panel you will be able to create them within each article, that is, when you write an article together with the rest of the editor options, you will be presented with the option to insert a tooltip.

Simple Tooltips

So it has the disadvantage of having to create the tooltips one by one or the sale of being able to create it like this because imagine that you only want to create a tooltip for the term PS4 only in a specific article and not in the entire blog. In this sense, if we install both plugins, we can always choose whether we want to create a tooltip for a keyword for the entire blog or just for a specific time. That already depends on the needs of each one of the 2 plugin to choose, but as I say installing the 2 we will have both options.

Another advantage of this plugin is that unlike the previous one here if we can choose the color of the tooltip packs, here I leave a sample of a tooltip created with this plugin:

As I say, we can choose any color, and I say any, because it uses HEX and thus we will be able to choose between millions of colors in a simple way, also we will not only be able to choose the color of the pack, also if it has a certain degree of transparency and also the color of the letter of the box, we go from the text.

That’s a great aesthetic advantage, but unlike the previous plugin, this one doesn’t allow inserting videos or photos as tooltips, only text, and that’s obviously a disadvantage.

We also have the options to choose if the box will appear more to the left, right or in the center, which is the case of the previous screenshot.

Another option that it gives us is to disable tooltips for mobile devices.

This plugin does not have a paid version, it is completely free.

Summary

Basically the first plugin is global and the second we could say that it is manual or local. In addition the second has more customization of the pack but against it you can not use videos or photos. In addition Simple Tooltip is free and the other one is also and although it has a paid version the free version is very complete.

In the end I cannot give any advice because it will depend a lot on the needs of each one and I cannot imagine what kind of questions you will use these plugins for, I will of course implement it in some blogs, because they are really useful even to create a kind of Wikipedia, because using the first plugin I can create tooltips with links that allow each time a term appears to take you to a certain article.

As I say, the possibilities are very varied. I hope this article is useful 🙂
