Create a table of contents in WordPress with plugins

What is a table of contents? As an image is worth a thousand words I leave you an image:

Basically it is that, a list that accumulates the h1, h2, h3, etc. Or what comes without the same, the points of an article or its titles and subtitles, basically a table of contents is an index.

We can easily create a table of contents in WordPress using plugins, in this article I will mention 2 of them, surely the most relevant.

Table of Content Plus

This plugin is the one I’m currently using on the blog you’re reading, but it might not be the best. Basically I use it because I like it more but it has a big flaw: it takes a long time without updating, for that reason if you use it I advice you to make a back up, likely It won’t be necessary but is a good caution practice.

Table of Contents Plus

Why I like this plugin?

For the professional design, moreover is an customizable plugin, you can choose thing like:

  • You can configure it to show the table of contents on the sites you want: post, pages and others, it is also complemented by other plugins you have such as languages: polylang for example. In addition to being able to choose where it is displayed, it also let you to choose how many headings or points there must be for it to be displayed.
  • It allows you to display where you want: for example, before the text begins, that is, the table is the first thing you see, or after the first title or period, or it is displayed after the initial text but before the first period. , etc.
  • You can choose the table size and the site where It is displayed: right, left, center.
  • You can choose the text font used in the table.
  • Other thing that you can do with this plugin is to choose from several pre-designed themes.
  • Another interesting function is that it allows you to choose which headings should appear in the table and which should not, being able to choose between h1 to h6, if you don’t know what this is, I recommend you search for “heading html”. Because it is something that would be good for you to know as a blogger even if you don’t like computers.
  • Finally, it has a very important function that is to exclude headings, and this is very important … why? Because there are many plugins such as plugin “related articles”, ads if we put them in the middle of our posts, widgets, etc. that use headings (heading) and that will automatically appear in the table of contents. But with the exclusion tool, we only have to take some of the keywords that the elements that I have mentioned use and they will automatically be excluded from the table of contents.

Easy table of content

I like this plugin less than the previous one, but it is clear that it has advantages. What I like the least about this plugin is the design, but let’s analyze its points:

Easy Table of Contents

  • Unlike the other one, this one is more updated at the time of writing the article, while the other one was last updated 3 years ago, Easy Table of Content last updated it 3 months ago, so it is not outdated.
  • Impressive integration with plugins, detects all kinds of content related plugins, such as PDF plugins such as 3D Flipbook or snippet plugins such as Woody Snippets, etc. Which allows us to include these contents in the table of contents, although in principle it is not very important either because it would be enough to put heading to those content extras that these plugins introduce. But the one that also gives us the possibility of eliminating from the table of contents the contents introduced by those plugins, that is interesting.
  • Personalization: It allows us to make the table of contents floating, it allows us to choose fonts, colors for each element of the table such as the borders, the text or the background for example, it also has to choose some themes. At first glance it seems better in this aspect than the previous plugin, since it has more customization features but …… it is nowhere near the level of visual quality that the previous one has, with a clearly superior and more modern appearance.
  • It also has a function like the one described in the previous plugin that allows us to exclude headings that automatically insert certain content plugins such as ads, widgets, related entries, etc.
