How to add donations of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in WordPress

We already live in the age of the blockchain, Bitcoin is getting old and a few thousand new cryptocoins have been born if we count the tokens.

Ethereum, IOTA, Ripple, Litecoin, BAT, Zcash … are just some of the 50 cryptocurrencies that head thecapitalization ranking that is counted in hundreds of millions of dollars.

It makes sense that we start wanting to receive donations in cryptocurrencies, and that’s what this article is about, how to get it.

Create a wallet in the cryptocurrency you want

The first thing is to do accounts in the wallets that we want to receive the cryptocurrencies.

For example, with Coinbase we can receive cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Bitcoin, BAT, Zcash, etc. Coinbase is an online money exchange house where we can buy and sell cryptocurrencies and withdraw funds in fiat money to our bank for example, or to other sites such as Binance or Skrill, etc.

We can also make local accounts as with for example Coinomi, which gives you dozens of wallets for direct wallets.

In any case my recommendation is that you allow them to donate using several of the main cryptocurrencies,  more is better, I would put the ones that I know the most users handle, because for example IOTA is one of the largest and also Ripple, but nobody would use It to donate. Those that would use and have more active users are: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero, Zcash, Classic Ethereum, Stellar, Basic Attention Token, and others.

If Coinbase or Coinomi does not cover all the cryptocurrencies you want, then use a second purse.

Implement the wallets on our website for donations

There are two way to do it:

The comfortable way: using a plugin, here I leave some of the best wordpress plugins for crypto-donations

BitMate Author Donations

Of course with a plugin is very comfortable, but it is too easy to do hehe.

Using BitMate Author Donations, a free plugin that is supported in turn ironically with donations in crypto too.

Basically you are looking for it within your WordPress installation, installing a new plugin and that’s it. It will appear in the left sidebar with the rest of wordpress options and their installed plugins. You click on “Bitmate”, in “Getting Started” and there they will show you a shortcode that you have to paste where you want.

Then in “Display Settings” within Bitmate, there is a link that will take you to “your profile” of the WordPress options, where there will be a series of fields to fill with the addresses of your wallets for the cryptocurrencies that are observed in the capture :

You have to fill them obviously, the ones that you leave empty simply will not appear.

When you fill in and save, you will be shown in the footer of each entry of your blog the options to donate such that:

It has the snag that the icons look blue and when you pass the mouse over they take the color of each cryptocurrency, which looks good, but it’s a little mistake that does not allow you to customize the icons or that allows you to be the other way around. , that they have the colors of the logos and when the mouse is put in blue, it would make more sense like that.

Once you click on a cryptocurrency, you will have the following to donate:

Thanks to the shotcodes I mentioned at the beginning you can put the banners of donations not only in the footer of each post that appear automatically, but in the sidebar, in the header, or even within the articles, in the middle of them for example.

By the way, the wallet address used in the example belongs to the Free Software Foundation 🙂

Crytothanks

Cryptothanks is a totally free plugin from wordpress.org, easy to install as all and very easy to customize, just like the previous plugin will appear in our sidebar inside our wordpress panel. And we will simply have to fill in the cryptocurrencies that we want with our wallet adresses. In the example, I use addresses of donations from the FSF, except the Monero that I do not remember where I got it from.

So simple, then we will have a word, well a shortcode: “[cryptothanks]”, that will appear in our plugin panel, we simply have to paste that shortcode where we want, at the end of a post, in a widget, where we want.

The cryptocurrency icons will appear for which we have already added a purse address.

As you can see in the previous screenshot, many cryptocurrencies are available such as Bitcoin (it does not appear in the capture because it would be too small), Monero, Stellar, Zcash, Ethereum, Litecoin, BitcoinCash, Ethereum Classic, etc.

In addition this plugin allows us to customize the donation box:

It allows us to take the color of the buttons, its size, personalize the message, I have put “Dóname cryptocurrencies”, for example. They also have an animation which is that when you click an icon it spins before appearing a little popup with the wallet address in alphabetical format and of course in BIDI format.

This is how the icons look:

And It is how looks like when you click It:

You can get this plugin here.

CryptoThanks Vs Bitmate

CryptoThanks is much more customizable than Bitmate, both the icons and the message, plus it allows you to add more crypto currencies than Bitmate.

On the other hand Bitmate has the option to show in the footer after each article, the donation box, although that is not a big advantage since it is enough to use the widgets of our wordpress or a plugin to put extra widgets, and difference saved.

What if Bitmate does not have CryptoThanks is that it has more icons and the pack is also cooler. In the end it is a question of tastes and needs.

Create a cryptocurrency donation banner without a plugin

Do not be lazy, and create your bitcoin donation banner and other cryptocurrencies yourself. How? Well it’s very simple, in the first point we saw that there are many cryptocurrency wallets, they will simply provide you with the public addresses as we have seen in the plugin point, and they will also provide you with a BIDI code so you simply copy both and paste them into the widgets of your wordpress theme and ready, or even paste it directly in the post. A bit seedy perhaps, but enough.

The cryptocurrencies icons can be downloaded from this website.

You could also add effects with Javascript, such as popup as in the plugins when you click a cryptocurrency and the popup shows you the BIDI and the purse address in questión, also with CSS you can add hover effects, etc.

How to get cryptocurrency donated

The first thing obviously is to have visitors. If you do not have more than 100 visits per day no bother to put the banner, unless you have very loyal visitors and love your content, you will not get much with so few visits.

Once we have the visitors, we have to call them to action, if we do not talk about things related to cryptocurrencies or computer science in our blog, surely we will not get donations even though we have many visits because our visitors will probably are not users of this technology that is the blockchain .

Finally, if you meet the 2 requirements above, I recommend that your donation banner is elegant, colorful, that you try to put them on different sites to see which is the most effective, although in my opinion, putting it at the end of each article almost always goes to be the most effective site, since in the sidebars it is related to advertisements and visitors have developed selective blindness.

And finally: appeal to your work, that is, a message of “donate me here” and below the addresses of the wallets, it will not be as effective as a personalized message such as: “Thank you very much for visiting me, if this article you have found it really useful, I would appreciate it if you consider a donation. ” Even so it is too cold yet, but it will always depend on the content of the web, so I can not recommend an exact message, everyone knows their audience 🙂

Acepto donaciones de BAT's mediante el navegador Brave 🙂
